This is the colorpoint version of the Siberian
Forest Cat, which was developed from the latter's cross-breeding with
Traditional Siamese. It was not done
specially by humans, but occurred naturally over many years. In the 1980s
the descendants of this "criss-crossing" were taken to breeding centers
and soon were officially recognized. The biggest of these centers, or at
least, the most specialized one is in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia,
which stands on the Neva river. That is why the breed is called the Nevsky
Masquerade Cat. As for the 'Masquerade' part, it's obvious isn't? All the
cats look as if they're wearing a mask. Technically, the Nevsky is actually
a color form of the Siberian, and some feline associations recognize it
as such, but just because it looks like a Siberian, doesn't mean it is
the one. Nevsky is more vocal and attached to humans than the Siberian:
it inherited the character of its Siamese ancestors.
